Deficiency models suggest that women are reticent about negotiating for higher compensation because they lack confidence or training. Research by Hannah Riley Bowles and colleagues suggests otherwise. They found that women’s reticence to negotiate for higher pay to be based not on so called ‘deficiencies’ but rather on an accurate assessment of the social costs that accrue to women who “ask”.
