Female Political Role Models Inspire, But Girls Lukewarm on Running for Office

Professor Mary Shapiro is quoted in a Market Watch article examining a student political opinion poll conducted by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools. The coalition surveyed 1,600 girls from across the country on their views on the 2008 election and their level of interest in running for office. Simmons School of Management Professor, Mary Shapiro says: "This is a generation which has grown up with multi-culturalism, not just as a media created concept, but as a reality. Seeing a woman run for political office may be seen as 'normal' given the number of strong role models these girls have."

Competition For Women Entrepreneurs Awards Simmons School of Management Graduate $15,000 For Fair Trade Apparel Company

BOSTON (Oct. 22, 2008) – A recent MBA graduate creating her own fair-trade women's apparel company won more than $15,000 in prize money and in-kind business service awards during the third annual Silverman Business Plan Competition held this month at the Simmons School of Management, the leading business school in the U.S. specifically designed for women.

Simmons spinout sees a charger in every garage

A Simmons College spinout is looking a few years down the line to give a jump-start to the car of the future. Simmons School of Management graduate student and entrepreneur Jennifer Morris has launched LocalWatt LLC, which plans to market a “charging station” for hybrid and electric cars to parking garages and parking lots, for drivers to “gas” up while their cars are parked.

Deborah Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor of Women and Leadership at the SOM, is quoted in a Forbes.com article examining bargaining during tough economic times. Kolb is quoted as saying: "Especially in this gloomy economic climate where people are hesitant to shop, retailers are much more eager to move merchandise….The performance of store managers is often based on how well they sell merchandise. Sometimes their best alternative is to sell the item to you at a discounted rate rather than have it sitting there and eventually go on clearance."
